It is highly recommended that private individuals apply for a tax identification code and request a tax card prior to receiving any income in Hungary.
In order to receive a Hungarian tax card, you have to fill in a special form provided at the Hungarian tax office.

Documents required for a tax card:
- Passport
- Proof of accommodation (Lakcímkártya or a Contract)
- Residence permit
Process:
- You will get your tax number immediately (so you can pass it on to your employer)
- You will receive your tax card only within 2-3 weeks by post.
- Depending on your address, you can find the list of the Hungarian tax offices (called "NAV" in Hungarian) that handles your case.
- Issuance of the card is free of charge for the first card. (3000 HUF is the price in case of replacement.)
